Empowering Women in Media
A Recap of the Austin Alliance for Women in Media Luncheon
The Austin Alliance for Women in Media (AWM) is more than just a networking group—it's a powerhouse of support, connection, and growth for women in Austin's dynamic media industry. By offering a platform for education, advocacy, and recognition, AWM plays a crucial role in helping women thrive in their careers. Whether you're a seasoned professional or just starting, AWM provides a vibrant community where you can learn, share, and build lasting relationships.
Today’s AWM event at Maggiano’s Little Italy in The Domain was nothing short of inspiring. The room buzzed with energy as women from all corners of the media landscape came together to explore the latest trends and innovations shaping our industry. Guided by the talented Taylor Ellison, an Emmy award-winning TV host and producer, the event featured a panel of experts who shared invaluable insights and sparked engaging discussions among attendees.
A Closer Look at the Panelists' Insights:
Agnes Varnum: As the founder of Power the Press, Agnes brought a wealth of experience in event production and community building. She highlighted how events can serve as powerful tools for media organizations, not just to generate revenue but to foster connections and collaboration. Agnes showcased successful examples of subscription-based models, emphasizing how these can enable media companies to expand their coverage and strengthen their content.
Elizabeth McQueen: A seasoned podcast host and producer at KUTX, Elizabeth offered a refreshing perspective on the role of joy in media. In a world where news consumption can often feel overwhelming, she reminded us of the importance of creating content that uplifts and engages. Elizabeth explored how media professionals can reinvigorate their storytelling by focusing on positive, meaningful narratives that resonate with audiences on a deeper level.
Kimberley Jones: The Editor-in-Chief of The Austin Chronicle, Kimberley shared the Chronicle’s journey of rediscovery in 2024. She discussed how the pandemic allowed the publication to pause, reflect, and return to its roots as Austin’s beloved weekly newspaper. By doubling down on what makes the Chronicle unique—its deep connection to arts, music, and community—Kimberley and her team have breathed new life into the paper, rekindling the passion of its readers and journalists alike.
Reflecting on the event, I found it incredibly valuable—not just for the knowledge shared but for the sense of community it fostered. The insights from Agnes, Elizabeth, and Kimberley were both inspiring and actionable, offering fresh ideas on how we can all contribute to a more vibrant, connected media landscape. A heartfelt thank you to the panelists for their wisdom, to Taylor Ellison for her exceptional moderation, and to the corporate sponsors who made this event possible. I’m excited to take these lessons forward and continue growing within this fantastic community.
